Live-action/CGI Rugrats movie in the works at Paramount

October 3, 2024 by Matt Rodgers

The Rugrats have taken their first baby-step towards a return to the big-screen with the news that Paramount Pictures are developing a live-action/CGI feature adaptation of the popular Nickelodeon toon.

According to Deadline Pitch Perfect director Jason Moore has been tasked with bringing Tommy, Chuckie, Phil and Lil back to cinema screens in a Who Framed Roger Rabbit-style blend of live-action and animation. He will work from a script written by SNL‘s Mikey Day, who co-wrote alongside his colleague Streeter Seidell.

Created by Arlene Klasky, Gábor Csupó and Paul Germain, Rugrats premiered on Nickelodeon in 1991. It depicted the day-to-day lives of four toddlers and their imagination-fuelled adventures.

The babies have already toddled their way onto the big-screen in the shape of 1998’s The Rugrats Movie, which grossed $140 million at the worldwide box-office. That was followed by 2000’s Rugrats in Paris, which earned $103 million, and 2003’s Rugrats Go Wild, which fizzled out with $55 million. The cartoon has remained popular though, and was rebooted in 2021 as a CG-animated show for Paramount+.
