Jim Carrey on what it would take for How the Grinch Stole Christmas 2

December 15, 2024 by EJ Moreno

Jim Carrey has never been a mean one about returning for How the Grinch Stole Christmas 2, but he’s been coy about a sequel.

While chatting with ComicBook about Sonic the Hedgehog 3, the Christmas release of that film led the conversation to get a bit green. Carrey was asked what it would take for another round as The Grinch, and he finally revealed his needs.

“Oh, gosh, you know, if we could figure out the Grinch,” Carrey said. “The thing about it is, on the day, I do that with a ton of make-up and can hardly breathe. It was an extremely excruciating process. The children were in my mind all the time. ‘It’s for the kids. It’s for the kids. It’s for the kids.’ And now, with motion capture and things like that, I could be free to do other things. Anything is possible in this world.”

Universal Pictures released Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas on November 17, 2000. The Ron Howard-helmed film was a commercial success at the box office, grossing $346 million worldwide. It spent four weeks as the top film domestically and later became the sixth-highest-grossing film of 2000.

Carrey’s performance was hailed as the film’s centerpiece. His Oscar-winning make-up transformation and commitment to the role earned him a nomination for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture—Musical or Comedy.

You can next find Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik (and Gerald Robotnik) in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, which opens in cinemas this coming week.
