Zach Braff confirmed for Scrubs reboot with more original stars to be approached

May 22, 2025 by Ricky Church

Months after news broke that a Scrubs revival is officially in development, we now have word that Zach Braff has signed on to reprise his breakout role as John ‘J.D.’ Dorian, with more original series stars  also being approached to return.

Braff was the lead star of Scrubs for eight of its nine seasons as the ninth season was more of a spin-off titled Scrubs: Med School that mostly followed a new cast with Braff and fellow Scrubs stars Donald Faison and John C. McGinley featuring as regulars. Braff’s J.D. was the idealistic and day-dreamy protagonist who wanted to do whatever he could to help people as a doctor, even if meant annoying his mentor Dr. Cox played by McGinley.

Braff’s involvement comes after months of reported back-and-forth negotiations between him and ABC as he requested production to take place in Los Angeles rather than Vancouver.

Now that a deal has been reached, ABC and 20th Century TV will approach fellow Scrubs stars Sarah Chalke, Donald Faison, John C. McGinley and Judy Reyes for their involvement, though whatever deal Reyes makes make be more difficult as she is also starring as a lead for ABC’s drama High Potential.

Scrubs creator Bill Lawrence will have some involvement as Warner Bros. and ABC worked around Lawrence’s exclusive deal with WB to develop the revival, though he will not serve as a showrunner or writer when production really begins to pick up.

Scrubs is a medical comedy-drama television series that aired from 2001 to 2010. The show takes place at Sacred Heart Hospital and follows a group of young doctors as they navigate the ups and downs of their medical careers and personal lives.
