Scrubs revival gets series order with Donald Faison and Sarah Chalke joining Zach Braff in the reunion

Late last year it was revealed that a Scrubs revival was in the early stages of development, with Zach Braff subsequently signing on to reprise his role as Dr. John “J.D.” Dorian, and now comes word that the project is officially moving forward with a straight-to-series order from ABC.

The green light for a new season to launch during the 2025-26 TV season also came with the news that Braff will be joined by returning Scrubs co-stars Donald Faison and Sarah Chalke, who will be reprising their respective roles as Turk and Elliot. As per Variety, more original cast members are also expected to return.

The synopsis for the revival reads: “JD (Braff) & Turk (Faison) scrub in together for the first time in a long time- medicine has changed, interns have changed, but their bromance has stood the test of time. Characters new and old navigate the waters of Sacred Heart with laughter, heart and some surprises along the way.”

“Scrubs means so very much to me. So excited for the chance to get the band back together,” said original series creator Bill Lawrence, who will serve as executive producer on the revival alongside Braff, Faison and Chalke, while Scrubs veterans Tim Hobert and Aseem Batra will lead the revival as showrunners. 

Scrubs originally premiered on NBC back in 2001, and follows the lives of the staff at the Sacred Heart Hospital – specifically Braff’s JD, who begins the series a medical intern and served as narrator for the majority of the show’s run. It moved to ABC for its eighth season in 2008, which was originally intended as the finale, although it returned for a revamped ninth season – dubbed Scrubs: Med School – before coming to an end in 2010.
