Mel Gibson’s The Resurrection of the Christ set for 2027 release in two parts

August 10, 2025 by Gary Collinson

Mel Gibson’s long-planned follow-up to his hit 2004 film The Passion of the Christ is moving forward, and with Lionsgate having boarded the sequel earlier this year, Deadline now brings word that The Resurrection of the Christ is being split into two parts, both of which will see release in 2027.

Specific plot details for The Resurrection of the Christ are being kept under wraps, but from the title alone then anyone who’s familiar with the Christian origin story can likely hazard a decent guess. Although yet to be confirmed, The Passion’s Jim Caviezel and Monica Bellucci are expected to reprise their roles as Jesus and Mary Magdalen, and filming is expected to get underway in late summer in Europe with Gibson directing from a script he’s co-wrriten with Randall Wallace (Braveheart).

“For many, many people across the globe, The Resurrection of the Christ is the most anticipated theatrical event in a generation. It is also an awe-inspiring and spectacularly epic theatrical film that is going to leave moviegoers worldwide breathless,” said Lionsgate boss Adam Fogelson. “Mel is one of the greatest directors of our time, and this project is both deeply personal to him and the perfect showcase for his talents as a filmmaker.”
