The Top 100 Your Sinclair ZX Spectrum Games: #87 – Codename: MAT

June 2, 2016 by Villordsutch

Yesterday we had Wheelie, a rather brilliant piece of imagination, and today with No. #87 we drop into Codename: MAT – or as it’s also know Codename Mission: Alien Termination.

Micromega, who produced a number of games which ranged from Postman Pat’s Trail Game to the ultimate Deathcase, created Codename: MAT way back in 1984.

We have what on first appearance a game that looks very much like an Elite clone and albeit it’s a shooter in space, whichinvolves you jumping between different locations in our Solar System taking on Myon scum, in the USS Centurion, that’s as far as it goes. Choosing either Pilot of Commander gives you either a more direct or strategic game, myself I always went pilot to reflect the Luke Skywalker-like box-art painted, that and the Tie-Fighter-like ships you fought throughout the game; though it has to be said we never get to wield a lightsaber.

Most of the time it may appear you’re flying through a Windows 95 screensaver but when you do enter a dogfight with a Tie-Fighter Myon vessel you realise Codename: MAT was probably brilliant back when you were much younger, now however perhaps it’s not as great as you remember.
