Andrew Kreisberg: Convincing Warner Bros. to let Superman appear in Supergirl “wasn’t a tough sell”

September 10, 2016 by Gary Collinson

Having picked up the show from CBS earlier this year, The CW scored a major coup for the second season of Supergirl, convincing Warner Bros. and DC to let them introduce Superman into the superhero series, with Tyler Hoechlin taking on the role of the Man of Steel for his latest small screen incarnation.

Previous rumours have suggested that Warner Bros. is reluctant to allow its major characters from the current crop of feature films to appear on the small screen, but Supergirl producer Andrew Kreisberg has revealed to IGN that the studio was fully supportive of their vision, and that it “wasn’t a tough sell.”

“I think people would love to hear that we had to promise our children and there was a blood rite, and a goat was sacrificed, but the truth is we’re all partners, and we all want what’s best and so it really wasn’t a tough sell,” said Kreisberg. “We had our plan, and we presented it to Warner Bros. and to DC and they were totally supportive of it. It was more once they actually said yes, it was like, ‘Oh crap, now we have to do Superman!’ We have to find the right actor, and we have to write the best scripts. We have to make the suit. That was the stuff that gave us [headaches]. Actually pulling it off. But behind the scenes, everybody at Warner Bros. and DC and the CW, we’re all growing in the same direction.”

Kreisberg was also asked whether we might see more of Hoechlin’s Man of Steel beyond his initial appearance, responding that: “That’s going to be up to Warner Bros., DC and the audience, quite frankly. If it turns out as well as we hope, and the audience responds, then we’ll see what happens down the road.”

In Season Two, Kara has left the safety of being Cat Grant’s assistant in order to figure out what she really wants to do, while as Supergirl she continues to work at the DEO., protecting the citizens of National City and searching for Jeremiah and Cadmus. Along the way, she will team up with Superman (Tyler Hoechlin) to battle new villains, as she strives to balance her personal life with her life as a superhero.

Supergirl season two will get underway on Monday, October 10th.
