James McAvoy seemingly confirms Xavier return, Simon Kinberg rumoured to direct next X-Men instalment

February 22, 2017 by Gary Collinson

With the contracts for the main players of the First Class cast expiring after last year’s X-Men: Apocalypse, there’s been a lot of rumour and speculation about the next instalment of the main X-Men franchise, with one report even suggesting that 20th Century Fox is prepared for a soft reboot, should it not be able to convince its stars to return.

So far, details on the next movie – thought to be titled X-Men: Supernova – have been kept well under wraps, but following Sophie Turner’s comments that it will shoot this summer, it now seems that James McAvoy has confirmed his return as Professor Charles Xavier. McAvoy shared a photo of himself having dinner with producers Simon Kinberg and Hutch Parker, complete with the caption “I can’t wait for the summer.”

Now, it is possible that McAvoy is referring to Josh Boone’s X-Men: The New Mutants rather than Supernova, as he has also been rumoured to appear in the spinoff.

As for Supernova, we know that Simon Kinberg has reportedly been working on the screenplay (which is said to focus on the Dark Phoenix storyline), and according to Collider, Fox is apparently lining Kinberg up to make his directorial debut on the next instalment. Take this with a pinch of salt though, as the report comes with the old “plans might change” get out clause.

Are you excited about the prospect of James McAvoy returning as Professor X, and is Kinberg a good choice to direct Supernova? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below…
