Director James Gunn has recently spoken about the abilities of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 character Ego the Living Planet, played by Kurt Russell.
As his name suggests, Ego the Living Planet is… well, a planet that is alive, a sentient being capable of all kinds of wonderful things.
The character will be brought to the big screen for the first time in the much anticipated sequel to Guardians of the Galaxy. We know that Kurt Russell will be playing the Ego – hold on, Gunn explains just how Russell can play a planet – and that the character is the father of Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord.
Gunn goes into further detail about Ego and his abilities in an interview with Complex, stating that: “Ego is a living planet who is able to manifest himself in different ways he’s been alone for millions of years and he’s learned how to control the molecules around him in such a way as to create avatars of themselves, such as Kurt Russell. I think Ego was a very lonely character out there by himself and went off in search of love and perhaps found it in Quill’s mother.”

It all sounds pretty out there but this is Guardians we’re talking about. Just how Star-Lord’s relationship with his planet father will play out remains to be seen, but all will be revealed soon when the movie hits cinemas.
Set to the backdrop of ‘Awesome Mixtape #2,’ Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 continues the team’s adventures as they traverse the outer reaches of the cosmos. The Guardians must fight to keep their newfound family together as they unravel the mysteries of Peter Quill’s true parentage. Old foes become new allies and fan-favorite characters from the classic comics will come to our heroes’ aid as the Marvel cinematic universe continues to expand.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is scheduled for release on April 28th 2017 in the UK and on May 5th in the States, with director James Gunn reuniting with returning cast members Chris Pratt (Star-Lord), Zoe Saldana (Gamora), Dave Bautista (Drax), Bradley Cooper (Rocket), Vin Diesel (Groot), Karen Gillan (Nebula), Michael Rooker (Yondu), Glenn Close (Nova Prime) and Sean Gunn (Kraglin) alongside new additions Pom Klementieff (Oldboy) as Mantis, Elizabeth Debicki (The Man from U.N.C.L.E.) as Ayesha, Kurt Russell (The Hateful Eight) as Ego the Living Planet, Chris Sullivan (The Drop) as Taserface and Sylvester Stallone (Creed) in as-yet-unrevealed role.
