Warner Bros. could sue Universal over the Dark Universe name

June 1, 2017 by Samuel Brace

Warner Bros. are considering the option of suing their rival studio Universal over their Dark Universe.

Universal’s new Dark Universe is set to bring together a connected world of classic movie monsters, including the upcoming film The Mummy starring Tom Cruise, which will also feature an appearance by Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.

Universal are hoping for big things from their new shared universe, with lofty aims of matching the success achieved by outfits like Marvel and DC.

But an interesting development has recently come to light. Buried deep in a Hollywood Reporter feature on the project is the news that Warner Bros are reportedly “mulling legal action” regarding the name Dark Universe, as this is the working title for an upcoming DCEU Justice League Dark movie.

It has recently been announced that IT director Andrés Muschietti and Wild Tales helmer Damian Szifron are in the running to direct the proposed DC movie now that Doug Liman has dropped out.

If this does come to pass, WB could certainly have a case, causing Universal to either rebrand their proposed monster universe or settle with Warner Bros. financially. Watch this space.

Thought safely entombed in a tomb deep beneath the unforgiving desert, an ancient princess (Sofia Boutella of Kingsman: The Secret Service and Star Trek Beyond) whose destiny was unjustly taken from her is awakened in our current day, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension.

From the sweeping sands of the Middle East through hidden labyrinths under modern-day London, The Mummy brings a surprising intensity and balance of wonder and thrills in an imaginative new take that ushers in a new world of gods and monsters.

The Mummy is set for release on June 9th, 2017, with Alex Kurtzman directing a cast that includes Tom Cruise (Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation), Annabelle Wallis (Annabelle), Jake Johnson (New Girl), Courtney B. Vance (American Crime Story: The People v O.J. Simpson), Sofia Boutella (Kingsman: The Secret Service) and Russell Crowe (The Nice Guys).
