O’Shea Jackson Jr. to play baseball star Dock Ellis

June 15, 2017 by Gary Collinson

Straight Outta Compton star O’Shea Jackson Jr. is set to portray baseball pitcher Dock Ellis in a biopic entitled Dock, which has been scripted by Joey Poach (In Color) and is being produced by Ice Cube, David Permut and Jeff Kwatinetz.

Ellis enjoyed a decade-long career in Major League Baseball, where he played for the Pittsburgh Pirates, New York Yankees, Oakland Athletics, Texas Rangers and New York Mets. Throughout his career, he battled drug and alcohol addiction, and is best known for pitching a no-hitter against the San Diego Padres in 1970, claiming to have done so while high on LSD.

“Joey Poach’s script is one of the most heartfelt, honest and emotional pieces of material I’ve read in years, and I think the complexities of the character are a perfect fit for O’Shea,” said Permut, with Kwatinetz adding: “Part of Cube Vision’s mission is to bring compelling, provocative and timely stories to life. With Dock, we feel that now is the right time to tell Dock Ellis’ complex, but powerful, true story and couldn’t be happier to partner with David Permut, whose incredible body of work speaks for itself.”

After making his debut in 2015’s Straight Outta Compton, where he played his father Ice Cube, O’Shea Jackson Jr. will next be seen in the comedy drama Ingrid Goes West, and has Den of Thieves and Godzilla: King of the Monsters on his upcoming slate.
