The Strangers 2 director Johannes Roberts on the horror classics that have inspired the upcoming sequel

June 15, 2017 by Jordan Jones

Originally published June 15, 2017. Updated November 28, 2019.

The Strangers was a surprisingly good horror movie back in 2008. The film preyed on our instinctual fear of isolation, home invasion, and evil without any motive. A sequel was greenlit ages ago, and was only recently announced to be back in production; the movie was previously thought to be cancelled due to financial problems, and the untimely death of director Marcel Langenegger.

The movie is now back on track, and new director Johannes Roberts spoke to Dread Central about the movie, and the classic horror films that he is pulling inspiration from:

“It’s going to be great, I hope. I’m in week two of filming. It’s Christina Hendricks, Martin Henderson, Bailee Madison, Lewis Pullman … It looks absolutely incredible. I love Bertino’s film, I think it’s an amazing movie and tonally this movie is going to fit very well into that universe. It has a real strong emotional heart, which the first one did, and it has a very cool retro feel to it, a lot of sort of references to… I mean, I always bring a lot of John Carpenter with me because that’s what I grew up on, but also maybe going back a bit earlier to the seventies movies, from Don’t Look Now to Duel, the Spielberg movie, even Christine a bit, the John Carpenter movie. All of these influences are finding their way into the movie, but I think it’s going to be a real fantastic movie. I’m super excited about it.”

Interestingly, the director mentions two movies that revolve around vehicles, and chases. Could The Strangers 2 be stepping out of the household, and get behind the wheel at some point?

The Strangers 2 is expected to begin shooting this summer.
