The Mummy didn’t exactly have the warmest welcome when it released earlier this month, with critics absolutely savaging the movie. It currently sits at a 16% on Rotten Tomatoes, with the general consensus stating that “The Mummy suggests a speedy unravelling for the Dark Universe.” There have even been rumors, in a frantic attempt to figure out what went wrong, of Tom Cruise allegedly taking over production, and ruining the film. What does The Mummy director Alex Kurtzman think of all of the hate surrounding his opening movie for Universal’s ambitious Dark Universe? Speaking to Business Insider, here’s what he had to say:
“It is the thing that kills your soul when you have just gone through an experience like this one we just went through”, he said. When asked about the critics, the director responded: “I’m not making movies for them. Would I love them to love it? Of course, everybody would, but that’s not really the endgame. We made a film for audiences and not critics so my great hope is they will find it and they will appreciate it.”
This is a response that has surfaced more and more these days: the idea of movies made just for fans. While that is a worthwhile endeavour, to be sure, aren’t movie critics fans of movies too? This is a debate that is not going away for a while. What do you think? Let us know in the comments below…
