Star Wars: The Last Jedi on pace to top $1 billion at the 2017 box office

December 28, 2017 by Samuel Brace

A 2017 box office figure of more than $1 billion is firmly in the sights of Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

The latest film in the saga was always going to be a box office behemoth, and despite its hugely divisive reaction from audiences, the Rian Johnson directed film is living up to that lucrative promise.

So far, The Last Jedi has claimed $844.2 million worldwide in fewer than two weeks, comprising of $424 million in North America and $420.4 million internationally.

Currently the 61st highest grossing film of all time, the $52.5 million in global takings on Tuesday has put the movie firmly on course to achieve $1 billion by the year’s end.

Reaching this figure would allow the film to join 2017’s Beauty and the Beast and Fate of the Furious which also achieved totals beyond $1 billion.

While The Last Jedi is performing very well and ahead of last year’s Rogue One, it is unsurprisingly way behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens which was helped by huge global anticipation.
