No plans for Independence Day 3 according to producer Dean Devlin

March 27, 2018 by George Chrysostomou

Independence Day: Resurgence, which came out in 2016, was fully intended to be a new lease of life for the Independence Day franchise, updating the sci-fi series and paving the way for a third movie.

Alas, the disappointment of the blockbuster left a sour taste in many people’s mouths, and the film failed to match the financial success of its predecessor.

Speaking about the future of the franchise to LRM, producer Dean Devlin was asked whether plans remain for a third instalment, with Devlin responding that: “I don’t know. I don’t know. Currently, I personally have no plans on doing another one.”

Whether it speaks to the quality of the sequel, or perhaps changing movie expectations from audiences, it appears there are no immediate plans to continue on with the Independence Day series, at the very least with Devlin involved. Who knows, perhaps we’ll get a third instalment another twenty years down the line.
