Gina Rodriguez cast in live-action Carmen Sandiego film

March 27, 2018 by Ricky Church

Around this time last year, Netflix announced Jane The Virgin‘s Gina Rodriguez would voice the world renowned thief Carmen Sandiego in an animated series. Now Deadline has reported Netflix has expanded the project with Rodriguez set to star in a live-action Carmen Sandiego film with her again starring in the title role.

This is an extension of the Rodriguez made with Netflix last year. The film will be a standalone adventure that will “embrace the beloved ’90s property.” A director and writer hasn’t been chosen yet, but Rodriguez will produce through her I Can and I Will production company with Kevin Misher, Caroline Fraser and Andy Berman of Misher Films.

Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? was a popular franchise in the 90s that was a board game, several video games and even a children’s game show. Kids would play as an agent of the ACME Detective Agency as they hunted Carmen Sandiego, the head of the criminal organization V.I.L.E. Carmen Sandiego was also an educational tool, teaching kids geography, math, English and history as they travelled the globe in search of the master thief.

The Carmen Sandiego animated series will air on Netflix in 2019 with 20 episodes. Its unknown when the live-action film will enter production, but there should be a clearer idea once we hear news on a writer and director.
