90s dance movie Can’t Touch This in development with Jon M. Chu

November 18, 2014 by admin

Having departed the Masters of the Universe reboot, Jon M. Chu seems to be looking to get back to his dance movie roots with Can’t Touch This, a dance movie based in the 1990s.

Chu has had much success from the teen-dance movie genre having directed fan favourites Step Up 2: The Streets and Step Up 3D and Can’t Touch This (named after the classic MC Hammer song) will seem him depart from action movies like G.I. Joe: Retaliation. Chu has also just wrapped on a big screen adaptation of Jem and the Hollograms and recently opened up Chu Studios, which saw him produce dance webseries The LXD.

Storyline for Can’t Touch This is being kept under wraps at the moment, but the script is being penned by Annie Mebane and Steve Basilone (Community) who have also worked on retro comedy The Goldbergs for ABC. It is unknown at this time if Chu will direct Can’t Touch This – as he is about to start work on Now You See Me 2 – but safe money would bet that the talent pool from The LXD and the Step Up franchise will be tapped up for the project.

Jem and the Hollograms is set for release next year and will star Aubrey Peeples (Sharknado) as Jem, Stefanie Scott (Insidious: Chapter 3) as Kimber, Hayley Kiyoko (Insidious: Chapter 3) as Aja and Aurora Perrineau (A House is Not a Home) as Shana.
