Sony developing animated Super Mario Bros. movie

December 14, 2014 by Gary Collinson

It looks like Mario and Luigi are heading back to the big screen, with leaked emails from the Sony hack revealing that producer Avi Arad (The Amazing Spider-Man) is developing an animated Super Mario Bros. movie.

According to Buzzfeed, Arad emailed Sony co-chairman Amy Pascal in October, stating that he is “the proud father of the Mario animated film”, and sending an photo of himself with Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata.

The iconic video game series has previously spawned a 1986 anime film Super Mario Bros.: Peach-Hime Kyushutsu Dai Sakusen! and the disastrous 1993 live-action movie starring Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo as the two Italian plumbers, along with the American animated series The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!, The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3, and Super Mario World.
