UPDATE: Roger Moore says Idris Elba can’t be Bond as 007 should be “English-English”

March 28, 2015 by Gary Collinson

Back during the Sony hack in December, leaked documents indicated that the studio are keen on British actor Idris Elba taking over the role of James Bond when Daniel Craig decides to call it a day and retire his license to kill.

Since then, we’ve heard former 007 Pierce Brosnan endorsing Elba for the part, but it seems fellow Bond Roger Moore isn’t keen on the idea, as he feels Bond should be ‘English-English.’

“A few years ago I said that Cuba Gooding Jr. would make an excellent Bond, but it was a joke,” Moore told Paris Match (via The Daily Mail) when asked for his thoughts on Elba taking on the iconic role. “Although James may have been played by a Scot, a Welshman and an Irishman, I think he should be ‘English-English’. Nevertheless, it’s an interesting idea, but unrealistic.”

UPDATE: Moore has now taken to Twitter, stating that his comments have been mistranslated: “An interview I gave to Paris Match implies I said something racist about Idris Elba. That is simply untrue. #Lost in translation.”

What do you make of Moore’s comments, and would you like to see Idris Elba as 007? Let us know in the comments below…
