A Backdraft sequel will reportedly start shooting in April

March 24, 2018 by Gary Collinson

According to Moviehole, Universal Pictures is in development on a sequel to Ron Howard’s action drama Backdraft, with the studio reportedly tapping director Gonzalo Lopez-Gallego (Apollo 18, Open Grave) to helm the project.

The site reports that the tentatively-titled Backdraft II will revolve around Sean McCaffrey, the now-adult son of Kurt Russell’s character from the first movie. Now an investigator with the Chicago F.D., McCaffrey still holds his uncle Brian (William Baldwin, who is set to reprise his role) responsible for the death of his father. The plot of the movie meanwhile will revolve around a group of agents who are sneaking a missile out of the country using a series of deadly fires as a distraction.

Filming on Backdraft II is apparently set to get underway in Romania and Toronto next month.

Released in 1991, Backdraft featured a cast that included Kurt Russell, William Baldwin, Scott Glenn, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Rebecca De Mornay, Donald Sutherland, Robert De Niro, Jason Gedrick and J. T. Walsh. It grossed over $150 million worldwide and received Oscar nominations for Best Visual Effects, Best Sound and Best Sound Effects Editing.
