Aardman announces when Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget will fly onto Netflix

June 15, 2023 by Matt Rodgers

Aardman Animation have used the Annecy International Animation Film Festival to present the first footage from their 23-years in the making sequel Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget, and also announced when the feathery follow-up will be available to stream on Netflix.

Aardman founder Peter Lord and director Sam Fell took the stage as part of the Netflix animation showcase to reveal that Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget will be released on December 15th of this year.

According to Deadline the footage shown depicted a chicken haven described by Fell as a “Chicken Wakanda”, which Ginger escaped to following the events of the breakout from the Tweedy farm in 2000’s $224 million-grossing original.

It’s now the 60s and Ginger (previously voiced by Julia Sawalha, now Thandiwe Newton) and Rocky (previously voiced by Mel Gibson, now Zachary Levi) are parents to a rebellious teenager named Molly (Bella Ramsey).

Having abandoned their thirst for adventure, the arrival of a fortress-like Happy Land factory farm on the other side of the water forces the couple to do the opposite of what they did in the original film, and break in to a terrifying industrial farming factory.

You can expect a trailer to drop sometime soon, but in the meantime let us know if you’re looking forward to Dawn of the Nugget by heading to our social channels @FlickeringMyth…

From the multi Academy and BAFTA award-winning Aardman (Creature Comforts, Wallace & Gromit, and Shaun the Sheep), and Academy Award and BAFTA-nominated director Sam Fell (ParaNorman and Flushed Away, respectively), comes Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget, the eagerly anticipated sequel to the beloved and highest-grossing stop-motion animated film of all time, Chicken Run. Having pulled off a death-defying escape from Tweedy’s farm, Ginger has finally found her dream — a peaceful island sanctuary for the whole flock, far from the dangers of the human world. When she and Rocky hatch a little girl called Molly, Ginger’s happy ending seems complete. But back on the mainland the whole of chicken-kind faces a new and terrible threat. For Ginger and her team, even if it means putting their own hard-won freedom at risk — this time, they’re breaking in!

Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget hatches onto Netflix December 15th, 2023.
