Amazon begins MGM IP deep dive with new RoboCop, Legally Blonde and Stargate planned

April 19, 2023 by EJ Moreno

MGM’s vast catalog of film and TV shows looks to enter a new era under Amazon Studios as new reports are saying the main reason behind Amazon’s insane $8 billion acquisition of the storied Hollywood studio is to dive deep into their IPs, and the first round of projects is beginning to take shape.

Deadline reports a host of A-list creators are circling reboots of RoboCop, Stargate, Legally Blonde, Fame, Barbershop, The Magnificent Seven, Pink Panther, and The Thomas Crown Affair. The outlet claims “each title is being approached differently” with plans for feature films and plans for expansive television projects.

Some of these projects are further in development than others, like Amazon Studios has already begun conversations on Legally Blonde as both for a movie and TV series. This means the long-delayed third movie could finally happen. The same goes for Stargate, which many fans have wanted a more modern retelling – Deadline notes a show and film are being eyed.

RoboCop looks to return to cinemas under Amazon’s new plans, with Deadline reporting a potential television series could take its place. On television, there are developments for new series based on Fame, Barbershop, and The Magnificent Seven.

MGM and Amazon already have plans for one of their most popular properties, with plans to expand the Creed universe spanning film and TV already in the works between Amazon Studios and filmmaker Michael B. Jordan.

Let’s see if MGM can continue its storied legacy under this new leadership.
