Avengers: Endgame decimates box office records with $1.2 billion opening weekend

April 28, 2019 by Gary Collinson

So, everyone knew that Avengers: Endgame was going to be huge, and with tracking estimates ranging as high as $1 billion for its opening weekend, it seemed all but assured that the Marvel superhero blockbuster would dethrone its predecessor Avengers: Infinity War to claim the record for the biggest box office debut of all time.

Well, not only has it achieved that feat, but it has done so comfortably, with Endgame grossing an unbelievable $1.2 billion worldwide to almost double Infinity War’s previous record of $640.5 million.

Domestically, Endgame pulled in $350 million across the Friday-to-Sunday period (almost $100 million more than Infinity War’s $257.6 million record), with a further $859 million internationally, including a record $330.5 million from a five day opening in China.

Along with the biggest debut of all time, Endgame has smashed a host of other records, including biggest ever single day in a territory ($156.7 million in the US on Friday), biggest IMAX debut ($91.5 million) and fastest movie to $1 billion worldwide (five days, compared to Infinity War’s eleven days).

Amazingly, Endgame is also the sixth highest-grossing Marvel movie ever just from its opening weekend, and currently sits behind Iron Man 3 on $1.215 billion. Given its start, and the hugely positive word of mouth, it seems a safe bet that Endgame will topple Infinity War ($2.048 billion) to become the highest-grossing MCU movie. The real question is, will it top Avatar to become the biggest film in history? It’s certainly looking like a very real possibility at this point in time.

Avengers: Endgame stars Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Chris Evans (Captain America), Mark Ruffalo (Hulk), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), Josh Brolin (Thanos), Brie Larson (Captain Marvel), Paul Rudd (Scott Lang), Don Cheadle (War Machine), Karen Gillan (Nebula), Chadwick Boseman (Black Panther), Tom Holland (Spider-Man), Sebastian Stan (Winter Soldier), Anthony Mackie (Falcon), Elizabeth Olsen (Scarlet Witch), Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange), Danai Gurira (Okoye), Benedict Wong (Wong), Chris Pratt (Star-Lord), Zoe Saldana (Gamora), Dave Bautista (Drax), Bradley Cooper (Rocket), Vin Diesel (Groot), Karen Gillan (Nebula), Pom Klementieff (Mantis), Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Gwyneth Paltrow (Pepper Potts), Evangeline Lilly (The Wasp), Letitia Wright (Shuri) and Tessa Thompson (Valkyrie).
