Black Panther screenwriter was originally hired to write a War Machine solo movie for Marvel

February 11, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Last month it was announced that Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow is finally going to get a solo movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but it seems that she could have been beaten to the punch by another Iron Man supporting character, with Black Panther screenwriter Joe Robert Cole revealing to Complex that Marvel considered a War Machine solo spinoff film prior to making Iron Man 3.

“I had written a Chinatown-style cop script and they met with me about it. At that meeting, they also said they were thinking of doing a War Machine movie,” said Cole. “I pitched a concept and won that job to write the script but they decided, based on what Iron Man 3 was going to be, they weren’t going to do War Machine anymore. But they asked if I’d be interested in joining their writer’s program instead.”

Don Cheadle’s War Machine has of course since appeared in Captain America: Civil War and will also feature in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4, and the prospect of Marvel revisiting its plans for a solo movie must be very slim indeed at this point. Still, let us know in the comments below if you’d be interested in seeing Rhodey getting his own movie…

After the events of Captain America: Civil War, King T’Challa returnsohome to the reclusive, technologically advanced African nation of Wakanda to serve as his country’s new leader. However, T’Challa soon finds that he is challenged for the throne from factions within his own country. When two foes conspire to destroy Wakanda, the hero known as Black Panther must team up with C.I.A. agent Everett K. Ross and members of the Dora Milaje, Wakandan special forces, to prevent Wakanda from being dragged into a world war.

Black Panther sees Ryan Coogler (Creed) directing Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa alongside Lupita Nyong’o as Nakia, Michael B. Jordan as Erik Killmonger, Danai Gurira as Okoye, Winston Duke as M’Baku, Forest Whitaker as Zuri, Daniel Kaluuya as W’Kabi, Angela Bassett as Ramonda, Florence Kasumba as Ayo, Martin Freeman as Everett Ross, Andy Serkis as Ulysses Klaue, Letitia Wright as Shuri, Sterling K. Brown as N’Jobu, John Kani as King T’Chaka and Nabiyah Be as Nightshade. The film is set for release on February 12th in the UK and on February 16th in the States.
