Brie Larson reveals why she took Captain Marvel role

September 6, 2018 by Samuel Brace

Brie Larson, the star of Captain Marvel, has revealed why she decided to take on the part of the MCU’s latest superhero.

While we have some time to wait before Captain Marvel’s March 2019 release date, fans have been temporarily satiated thanks to some newly revealed images from the movie, showing star Brie Larson in full costume.

But why did the actress, who is known mostly for dramatic works like Room, decide that she wanted to join the MCU as Captain Marvel? Well, Larson revealed the specifics to EW:

“I never saw myself doing something like this, mostly because I like being anonymous. I like disappearing into characters, and I always felt like if I was out in the public eye too much, it potentially limits you in the future.”

Larson was, of course, swayed in the end: “Just seeing a character who says how she feels and says what’s on her mind and doesn’t let people stand in her way is incredibly empowering.”

The actress also went onto reveal how surprised she was about what the film brought out of her: “I was an introvert with asthma before this movie. I really thought when they hired me, ‘I am the worst choice for an action movie.’ And I didn’t know that I had a little Keanu Reeves in me! Who knew?”

We will have to wait until the film’s first trailer to get a glimpse of Larson’s newly found action chops but it sounds like she had a great time making the movie and really embraced the physical nature of the character.

Captain Marvel follows Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races. Set in the 1990s, “Captain Marvel” is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Captain Marvel is being directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck (Mississippi Grind) and sees Brie Larson (Kong: Skull Island) leading the cast as Carol Danvers alongside Samuel L. Jackson (The Avengers), Ben Mendelsohn (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story), Djimon Hounsou (Guardians of the Galaxy), Lee Pace (Guardians of the Galaxy), Lashana Lynch (Fast Girls), Gemma Chan (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them), Algenis Perez Soto (Sambá), Rune Temte (Eddie The Eagle), McKenna Grace (I, Tonya), Annette Bening (American Beauty), McKenna Grace (Gifted), Ana Ayora (The Big Wedding), Vik Sahay (Chuck), Kenneth Mitchell (Star Trek: Discovery), Chuku Modo (The Good Doctor), Clark Gregg (The Avengers) and Jude Law (Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald).
