Clark Gregg can’t see Agent Coulson reuniting with The Avengers any time soon

December 1, 2017 by Gary Collinson

While there was a lot of speculation that Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War would see the big screen cast of the MCU joined by their television counterparts, we now know that the small screen stars will be absent when Earth’s Mightiest Heroes do battle with Thanos next year.

One actor who has traversed both sides is of course Clark Gregg, a.k.a. Agent Phil Coulson, who found himself quickly resurrected after his death in 2012’s The Avengers to lead ABC and Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. TV series. The show is about to launch its fifth season tonight, but as yet, the movies have made no acknowledgement that Coulson is alive – and Gregg doesn’t believe that is going to change any time soon.

“It is an ever-present theme,” Gregg tells Comic Book. “It’s really touching to me how much the fans stay obsessed with the idea of when the Avengers are going to learn Coulson’s alive. It’s something that…I don’t know, I find that so touching! I think the Avengers have moved on, they’re busy. But also I think it’s a great credit to the show and the characters and the actors who brought these characters to life and to our production team, to Mark Kolpack’s visual effects and to the great writing of our writers, Jed Whedon, Mo Tancharoen and Jeff Bell, because I think there’s a growing number of people who kind of feel like this feels like a part of that bigger world and they want to see the various worlds – whether it’s the incredible Netflix world of New York, they just want at some point feel that this is one big story, which I still believe it is. And you know, when the time is right, who knows?”

The Avengers director Joss Whedon has previously stated that “as far as I’m concerned in the films, yes [Coulson] is dead” and it seems that could well be the Marvel Studios line. However, let us know in the comments below if you’d like to see Coulson popping up in a future Avengers movie…

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season five airs on ABC on Friday nights.
