David Leitch to direct big screen remake of Kung Fu

January 24, 2020 by Gary Collinson

Deadpool 2 and Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw director David Leitch appears to have found his next project in a big screen remake of the classic 1972 TV series Kung Fu.

As revealed by Deadline, Universal has snapped up the rights to the series and set Leitch to helm what is being described as “a contemporary-set action packed feature film”.

Running on ABC between 1972 and 1975, Kung Fu starred David Carradine as Kwai Chang Caine, a Shaolin monk and martial arts master who travels to the American Old West in search of his half brother. A female-fronted TV reboot is currently in the works at Fox.

In addition to directing, Leitch – who is also attached to a remake of the Bruce Lee classic Enter the Dragon – will produce the film alongside Kelly McCormick through the 87North Productions banner, while Ed Speilman, the creator of the original TV series, is on board as executive producer.
