DC’s Aquaman dominates the Christmas box office, passes $600 million worldwide

December 27, 2018 by Amie Cranswick

After comfortably fending off competition from Mary Poppins Returns and Bumblebee over the Friday to Sunday period with $72.1 million, Warner Bros. and DC Films Aquaman continued its dominance of the North American box office over Christmas with a total five-day opening of $105 million.

The Jason Momoa-headlined superhero blockbuster earned $22.1 million on Christmas Day, the sixth-highest ever after Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($49.3 million), Star Wars: The Last Jedi ($27.5 million), Rogue One: A Star Wars Story ($25.9 million), Sherlock Holmes ($24.6 million) and Avatar ($23.1 million).

Aquaman added a further $16.9 million on Wednesday (that’s just $66k shy of Avengers: Infinity War’s first Wednesday), and is expected to pull in around $54 million in its second weekend domestically. Worldwide, the film has now passed the $600 million mark, and some analysts are now predicting that it could reach as high as $1 billion before it finishes its run.

For comparison, Justice League grossed $657.9 million, with Man of Steel earning $668 million, Suicide Squad $746.8 million, Wonder Woman $821.8 million and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice leading the DCEU with $873.6 million.

From Warner Bros. Pictures and director James Wan comes an action-packed adventure that spans the vast, visually breathtaking underwater world of the seven seas, “Aquaman”, starring Jason Momoa in the title role. The film reveals the origin story of half-human, half-Atlantean Arthur Curry and takes him on the journey of his lifetime — one that will not only force him to face who he really is, but to discover if he is worthy of who he was born to be … a king.”

Aquaman is directed by James Wan (The Conjuring) and stars Jason Momoa as the titular hero, reprising his role from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League, along with Amber Heard as Mera, Patrick Wilson as Ocean Master, Willem Dafoe as Dr. Vulko, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta, Dolph Lundgren as King Nereus, Nicole Kidman as Atlanna, Temuera Morrison as Tom Curry, Ludi Lin as Murk, Michael Beach as Jesse Kane, Djimon Hounsou as the Fisherman King, Randall Park as Dr. Stephen Shin, Otis Dhanji as a young Arthur Curry, Julie Andrews as Karathen and Graham McTavish as King Atlan.
