Disney rumoured to be lining up Joss Whedon to direct a Star Wars movie

May 7, 2015 by Gary Collinson

With Joss Whedon currently joining the ranks of the unemployed following his second Marvel outing Avengers: Age of Ultron, rumours are circulating that he could be set to reunite with Disney by taking on directing duties on an upcoming Star Wars movie.

The report stems from the Get Your Geek On Podcast (via MoviePilot), who claim that Whedon “is a lock” to close out Disney’s sequel trilogy with Star Wars: Episode IX, following J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Rian Johnson’s Star Wars: Episode VIII.

As well as Episode IX, Disney and Lucasfilm are also on the hunt for a director for their second Star Wars Anthology movie following the departure of Josh Trank, and the studio is surely keen to keep its ties with Whedon, considering how much money he’s made them with his two Avengers movies.

Saying that, Joss Whedon and Star Wars also makes for an eye-catching headline, so don’t be surprised if he’s far from “a lock” at this point, or indeed if this is anything more than pure speculation.
