Duncan Jones gives an update on his Rogue Trooper movie

July 30, 2019 by Gary Collinson

Back in July of last year, it was announced Moon and Warcraft director Duncan Jones is teaming with Rebellion, owner of the iconic British comic 2000AD, to develop a feature adaptation of Gerry Finley-Day and Dave Gibbons’s Rogue Trooper.

During an interview with Entertainment Weekly to discuss the tenth anniversary of Moon, Jones has now provided an update on his progress with Rogue Trooper, and it’s all sounding very positive for fans of the strip.

“We’re in the exciting bit right now of concept-arting-out some of the elements of the script,” states Jones. “The script is really looking pretty good now. It’s getting to the point where we’re going to have to start casting and making the thing. It really does look very good.”

“I think we’ve come up with a really smart way to approach it,” he continues. “Hopefully, [we’ve] learnt the lessons from previous 2000AD films, where they were either not loyal to what the original comic was, or, in Dredd’s case, just done at slightly too big a budget to actually be successful, even though the film was critically well-received. I think we’ve really kind of nailed this one. So, it looks good. It looks good that we’ll get to make it and I think people are going to really like it.”

Rogue Trooper tells the story of a genetically-engineered soldier bred to fight on Nu-Earth, a hellish planet consumed by an endless war between the Norts and the Southers. The sole survivor of a massacre that claimed his fellow GIs, Rogue sets out on a mission to find the traitor who betrayed them – the personalities of three dead comrades plugged into his helmet, backpack, and rifle.
