The War Doctor has Cybermen problems in new Doctor Who adventure coming this December

August 18, 2025 by Andrew Newton

This December, the Cybermen join the Time War against the Daleks and the Time Lords in an epic new Doctor Who full-cast audio drama from Big Finish. The War Doctor Rises: Cybergene sees Jonathon Carley return as the War Doctor in an epic three-hour adventure by writer Jonathan Morris.

In The War Doctor Rises: Cybergene, the Cybermen have decided to get involved in the Time War, and it isn’t just any Cybermen, it’s every Cyberman ever, the Mondasians, Telosians, all of them. Every variant of the cybernetic race seen in the TV series is making a bid to become the victor of the Time War.

As the battle continues between Gallifrey and Skaro, the War Doctor finds himself on a war-torn world, where soldiers are kept alive by familiar means. Soon, a horrifying evolution begins, and in a long-dead Cyber-tomb the Doctor uncovers the truth that the ultimate Cyber-form is coming to join the Time War. Fortunately, the Doctor will have help from Nesta, a battle-hardened surgeon (played by Mitra Djalili), in stopping their schemes and defending the cosmos.

Writer Jonathan Morris added: “(Script editor) Matt Fitton asked me if I wanted to do a War Doctor story, and I replied going, please can I do the Cybermen? What happened to the Cybermen during the Time War? I’ve never done a Cyberman story in twenty-odd years of working for Big Finish. Every now and then I’ve dropped little hints that I’d like to, but this time it’s finally happened. All these ideas I’ve had over the last twenty years about cool things I could do with the Cybermen, I’ve put into this story.”
