Ewan McGregor open to Trainspotting sequel

June 23, 2015 by Gary Collinson

Yesterday we brought you some comments from Ewan McGregor suggesting that he’s keen to return as Obi-Wan Kenobi for a future Star Wars movie, and now the actor has been speaking about another of his former roles, revealing that he’s open to another outing as Mark Renton in the long-rumoured sequel to the 1996 cult classic Trainspotting.

“I would be up for it,” states McGregor. “I’ve said that to Danny [Boyle]. Everybody has talked about it and speculated about it, but I don’t if it’s happening yet. I’ve not seen a script and I don’t know if there is one. It’s been a long, long time.”

McGregor had previously distanced himself from any possible Trainspotting reunion, owing to a fallout between himself and Danny Boyle after he lost out on a role in The Beach to Leonardo DiCaprio. However, it seems that is all in the past now, as McGregor explained:

“I just think I’ve changed my opinion about it. We’ve all moved on and there is a lot of water under the bridge now. I miss working with Danny, I did some of my best work with him and he’s one of my favourite directors I’ve worked with. There was some bad blood and ill feeling, but that’s all gone now. I think it might be extraordinary to see a sequel 20 years after the original.”

Talk of a Trainspotting sequel has existed since Irvine Welsh published his follow-up novel Porno in 2002 and his picked up pace in recent years, with Boyle stating back in 2013 that he’d been keen to make the film if he can reunite the original cast.
