Exclusive Interview – John Waters Wants You To Make Mistakes As He Celebrates Cry-Baby on 4K

May 21, 2024 by EJ Moreno

EJ Moreno sits down with the Pope of Filth, John Waters…

“If your kids aren’t in any trouble in high school, they’re gonna be dull.”

John Waters is a filmmaker who never minces words. In our in-depth conversation about the re-release of Cry-Baby on 4K, we dish about all things bad and why that can be good.

From the juvenile delinquents we fawned over as youths to reinventing the image of iconic people, the man behind Pink Flamingos and Hairspray will surely give you endless quotes for days. Join us as we talk about his career, the passing of fellow legend Roger Corman, and so much more. Check out the interview below…

Kino Lorber Studio Classics’ 4K UHD + Blu-ray release of John Waters’ 1990 musical comedy Cry-Baby, starring Johnny Depp, presents both the theatrical cut in a brand new HDR/Dolby Vision master, from a 4K scan of the original 35mm camera negative (Disc 1, 4K UHD), and a brand new HD master of the Director’s Cut, from a 4K Scan of the 35mm Theatrical Cut original camera negative, 4K scan of the Director’s Cut interpositive (7 Minutes) and uprez of the SD master for the additional missing parts (Disc 2, Blu-ray).

Eisenhower is President. Rock ’n’ Roll is king. And Wade “Cry-Baby” Walker is the baddest hood in his high school. Screen idol Johnny Depp heads up a divine cast as the irresistible bad boy whose amazing ability to shed one single tear drives all the girls wild—especially Allison Vernon-Williams (Amy Locane), a rich, beautiful “square” who finds herself uncontrollably drawn to the dreamy juvenile delinquent and his forbidden world of rockabilly music, fast cars, and faster women.

It’s the hysterical high-throttle world of 1954 in this outrageous musical comedy from the marvelously maniacal mind of John Waters (Pink Flamingos, Hairspray). Also starring Susan Tyrrell, Iggy Pop, Ricki Lake, Traci Lords, Kim McGuire, Darren E. Burrows, Stephen Mailer and Polly Bergen, with appearances by Troy Donahue, Mink Stole, Joe Dallesandro, Joey Heatherton, David Nelson, Willem Dafoe and Patricia Hearst.

Cry-Baby will also be released separately on Blu-ray. The 4K UHD + Blu-ray edition and the standalone Blu-ray edition will be released on May 28, 2024.
