Exclusive Interview – Josh O’Connor talks God’s Own Country

August 30, 2017 by Freda Cooper

What has been dubbed “The British Brokeback Mountain” arrives in cinemas this Friday.  Set in the starkly beautiful Yorkshire Dales landscape, God’s Own Country traces the romance between a local farmer and a migrant worker.

Adopting the dialect and learning how to work on a farm were just part of Josh O’Connor’s preparation for taking on the role of the farmer.  Although, as one of the regulars in TV’s The Durrells, he’s used to sharing the screen with animals.  Talking to Flickering Myth’s Freda Cooper, he reveals there was instant chemistry on camera between him and co-star Alec Secareanu, one of four Romanian actors who auditioned for the role.  And, although being compared to Ang Lee’s Oscar winner is an honour, he believes the two films are very different.

God’s Own Country is released in UK cinemas on 1st September. Read our review here.
