Final Divergent film Ascendant heads to Starz as TV series

August 3, 2017 by Ricky Church

Though the Divergent film series came to an abrupt halt after last year’s Allegiant, the third film in the franchise, Lionsgate remains committed to finishing the franchise off. Deadline has reported that Ascendant, what was to be the final film in the series, is heading over to their recently acquired Starz as a TV series.

The Divergent Series is an adaptation of Veronica Roth’s trilogy depicting a dystopian future where society has been split into groups depending on one’s personality type. The Divergent Series: Allegiant was the first part of Roth’s final book with Ascendant to be part two, but after Allegiant flopped at the box office Lionsgate slashed the budget for Ascendant before ultimately pulling it from theaters with the hopes of making into a TV film.

Ascendant is now being eyed as a TV series, which is in the early stages of development, and will be written by Adam Cozad (Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, The Legend of Tarzan), who will executive produce alongside Lee Toland Krieger. There is no word yet whether the main stars of the series, Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Ansel Elgort or Miles Teller, would come back for the TV project, though Woodley has already expressed her disinterest, saying “I didn’t sign up to be in a television show.”
