Five stupid plot holes from Game of Thrones season 7 we hope are fixed in season 8

April 12, 2019 by Patrick Nolan

Patrick Nolan with five stupid plot holes from Game of Thrones season 7 he hopes to see fixed in season 8…

Everyone loves Game of Thrones; how else could season seven draw in over 30 million viewers every week for nearly two months. Yet it’s fairly obvious that the more recent seasons have taken certain liberties with the consistency of the writing. To help prove this point, we are going to take a look at some of the biggest screw ups from season 7 and hope they get some resolution in season 8.

Spoilers for season 7 ahead!

Arya vs Brienne

The point of this scene in episode four was fairly clear; to show Sansa how dangerous Arya had become in the time she had been away from her family since the first season. It’s too bad that the scene happens to be entirely ridiculous. “Brienne of fucking Tarth,” as The Hound says in episode 6, is established as one of the premier fighters in the fictional country of Westeros: she single-handedly defeats many notoriously skilled swordsmen in her on-screen career such as Jamie Lannister (season 3), Loras Tyrell (season 2) and The Hound (season 4).

We are then expected to believe that Arya has somehow become as equally skilled as Brienne in just a few seasons. Give us a break! This is clearly how the scene is meant to be interpreted as we see them draw in a duel. Arya claims that she was taught these skills by ‘no one,’ a reference to her time spent training in seasons five and six, yet most of the time we see her in Braavos she is ether begging, working as a spy or being beaten with a stick. Hardly the most ideal training for a master duellist.

Tyrion’s plan to convince Cersei

You can probably explain this particular mess away as a result of Tyrion’s alcoholism; maybe he lost some brain cells or was afflicted with amnesia between seasons because of it. Either way, his plan is completely unfeasible. In episode five Tyrion convinces several other characters that they need to capture a zombie from the Army of the Dead to convince Cersei to agree to a truce.

The many ways in which this plan sucks are innumerable. Tyrion knows at this point that Cersei cannot be trusted, she is impulsive, cruel and willing to betray anyone on a whim. Anything Cersei would agree to she would likely later betray; why bother convincing her then? It is also unclear how Tyrion knows that a zombie can be transported across the country in the first place. How does he know the magic that animates a zombie can work no matter where it gets taken? He obviously doesn’t know this – and for Tyrion to then risk other people’s lives for such a ridiculous plan makes him look like an absolute imbecile.
