Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Sofia Boutella and more testing for DC’s Birds of Prey

September 23, 2018 by Gary Collinson

With Warner Bros. and DC Films looking at a January production start for Birds of Prey, it seems we may soon learn who’ll be joining Margot Robbie in the cast of the Harley Quinn-led girl gang movie.

According to various reports in the trades, Warner Bros. and director Cathy Yan are currently testing a number of actresses to portray the characters of the Huntress, the Black Canary, and Renee Montoya.

According to reports, Margaret Qualley (The Leftovers), Mary Elizabeth Winstead (10 Cloverfield Lane), Cristin Milioti (Black Mirror) and Sofia Boutella (The Mummy) are up for the role of The Huntress, while Gugu Mbatha-Raw (The Cloverfield Paradox) and Jurnee Smollett-Bell (Underground) have been reading for Black Canary and Justina Machado (Jane the Virgin) and Roberta Colindrez (I Love Dick) are up for Renee Montoya.

Previous reports have claimed that Lady Gaga (A Star Is Born) had been offered the roles of both The Huntress and Black Canary, but turned them down.

Although details on Birds of Prey are scarce at present, rumours have suggested that the movie will see Harley teaming up with Black Canary, Huntress and Renee Montoya to save a young girl, Cassandra Cain, from the evil crime boss Roman Sionis, a.k.a. Black Mask.
