HBO president talks Watchmen plans, series could include original material

July 30, 2017 by Gary Collinson

A few days ago we brought you some comments from Damon Lindelof, who responded to the reports linking him to an HBO TV adaptation of Watchmen by stating that he’s had no talks with the cable network.

Well, it seems that may not be quite the case after all, judging by the latest remarks from HBO president Casey Bloys when asked by IGN about how a closed narrative such as Watchmen could serve as an ongoing series rather than a single season.

“I don’t want to talk too much about it, but Damon is thinking about it in a way exactly as you describe it,” Bloys said. “Which is, how do you take the material and derive from it a TV show, without making it a literal translation? Damon is one of the smartest, most passionate, most thorough writers I’ve ever worked with so he’s really thinking about this in amazing ways. Again, I don’t want to talk about the details of it, but when you sit with him and you see the way his mind works it’s really kind of amazing.”

Asked whether the potential series could include material not present in Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ original graphic novel, Bloys responded: “I think so, yes.”

DC Comics has already expanded the world of Watchmen with the Before Watchmen comic books, so there is plenty of pre-existing material for Lindelof and HBO to work with, should they decide to incorporate this material rather than coming up with something entirely new.

How do you feel about the possibility of HBO and Damon Lindelof expanding the world of Watchmen for an ongoing series? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below…
