Idris Elba and Ruth Wilson returning for new Luther movie

November 12, 2025 by Ricky Church

John Luther is returning for a new Luther feature film for Netflix with Idris Elba reprising his iconic role, but he will be joined again by Dermot Crowley as DCI Martin Schenk and Ruth Wilson as high-intelligent sociopath Alice Morgan, per The Hollywood Reporter.

Elba has portrayed DCI John Luther throughout Luther‘s five-series run as a brilliant and intuitive detective with a moral grey area when it comes to getting some cases solved. Wilson portrayed Alice Morgan in all but the fourth series as an equally brilliant but deadly sociopath who crossed Luther’s path in a murder scene she set up as a home invasion. The pair were drawn to each other and struck up an odd friendship where Alice’s more pragmatic view on solving problems often conflicted with Luther’s. At the end of the fifth series, she was presumed dead.

Crowley featured as Luther’s boss and friend Martin Schenk who has a more rigid belief in right and wrong, but still believes in Luther’s devotion to justice and ability to solve cases. Elba and Crowley reprised their roles in Luther: The Fallen Sun as they investigated a ruthless serial killer with a network of other killers.

The new Luther movie will be written by creator Neil Cross and focus on “a new wave of brutal, seemingly random murders hit London, with Luther secretly called back into service. But the dramatic question is, how can Luther save London when everyone on all sides seems to want him dead?” Directing will be Jamie Payne, who directed several Luther episodes and The Fallen Sun.

“Luther, Alice and Schenk are more than characters to me, they’re family,” Cross said on the announcement. “I never stop wondering where they are, what’s become of them … and what horrors might be stirring in the shadows of London while Luther’s not around. So we decided to get together and find out what happens next.”

“Neil has yet again, created a wonderfully dark tale to bring us all back together,” said Payne. “It’s a true joy to be back on the streets of Lutherland with the supreme talents that are Idris Elba and Dermot Crowley. I am also thrilled to be reunited with the brilliant and dangerous Alice Morgan played by the extraordinarily talented Ruth Wilson.”
