It prequel series Welcome to Derry in development at HBO Max

March 30, 2022 by Ricky Church

Get ready for more Pennywise as HBO Max is developing Welcome to Derry, a prequel series to Andy Muschietti’s It and It: Chapter Two.

The It films are an adaptation of Stephen King’s iconic horror novel which sees the small town of Derry, Maine plagued by a number of children mysteriously going missing. A group of misfit kids calling themselves The Losers Club discover it is the work of Pennywise the Dancing Clown, an otherwordly entity that feasts on fear before entering a 27-year hibernation only to awaken and start the cycle all over again. It follows their coming-of-age and the trauma inflicted on them by both Pennywise and their neglectful parents even into adulthood as they vow to defeat Pennywise once and for all.

Welcome to Derry will reportedly take place in the 1960s leading up to the events of the fist part of Muschietti’s It duology and further explore the origin of Pennywise, which was vaguely touched on in It: Chapter Two. Muschietti will executive produce alongside his wife and production partner Barbara Muschietti and writer Jason Fuchs. Should Welcome to Derry be given a series order, Muschietti will likely direct the first episode from a script written by Fuchs. Warner Bros. Television will produce the series.

The two It films made over $1 billion together at the box office. They starred Bill Skarsgård as Pennywise and Jaeden Lieberher, Sophia Lillis, Finn Wolfhard, Jeremy Ray Taylor, Chosen Jacobs, Jack Dylan Grazer and Wyatt Oleff as the kids with James McAvoy, Jessica Chastain, Bill Hader, Jay Ryan, Isaiah Mustafa, James Ransone and Andy Bean playing their adult versions respectively.
