Jack Black and Paul Rudd in talks for new take on Anaconda

August 23, 2024 by EJ Moreno

To quote the great Sir Mix A Lot: “My anaconda don’t want none,” and ‘none’ is a comedic reimagining of a 90s creature feature.

If you remember the 1997 horror film starring Jennifer Lopez and Ice Cube, it was a semi-serious attempt at a movie like Jaws, but no one could have expected what Columbia Pictures wants to do with the IP now.

THR reports Jack Black and Paul Rudd are in talks to lead a new version of Anaconda from co-writer and director Tom Gormican. The filmmaker is best known for the meta-comedy The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. While there’s little word on plot details, many expect a more comedic approach from the combo of Gormican, Black, and Rudd.

THR shares that “this new take involves a group of friends facing mid-life crises who are remaking their favorite movie from their youth. They head to the rainforest, only to find themselves in a fight for their lives against natural disasters, giant snakes, and violent criminals.”

Anaconda first debuted in 1997 and spawned a straight-to-video franchise in the 00s, including Anacondas: The Hunt for the Blood Orchid, Anaconda 3: Offspring, and Anacondas: Trail of Blood. In 2015, a team-up film blended two 90s creature features: Lake Placid vs. Anaconda.

Columbia Pictures has been developing this new version since 2023 and has “gone through many rewrites as the filmmaker and Columbia tried to find the right balance of tones.”

Stay tuned for more updates on this new Anaconda and be sure to let us know on our social channels @FlickeringMyth if you’re intrigued to see where this goes…
