James Gunn explains why the Guardians of the Galaxy soundtracks don’t play in movie order

August 10, 2017 by Samuel Brace

James Gunn, director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, has explained why the films’ soundtracks don’t play in movie order.

With so many movies being released these days, it feels like Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 came out a lifetime ago, but in reality, it’s only been a few months since the Marvel sequel delighted fans for another space set adventure.

While folks are waiting for the movie to hit VOD and Blu-ray, however, many have certainly been enjoying the film’s soundtrack, a given considering the myriad classic hits that are incorporated into the film and its predecessor.

But if you have found yourself wondering why it is that neither Guardians soundtrack plays in the order that the songs appear in the films, then wonder no more, as James Gunn has explained the thinking behind it to Cinema Blend.

“I think because the order they are in in the movie is different than the order that they work well as somebody who has put mixtapes together their whole life. The order of the songs in the movie doesn’t exactly work in the same way. So that’s why. When you’re putting songs together, there’s a flow to the way that the songs work together. And if you put them in the order in the movie, in winds up being too pop-y up front, and too dark on the back half. It gets a little darker as it goes on, especially Vol. 2.”

It makes sense to us, and fans will surely be eagerly anticipating just which classic tracks will be making their way onto the soundtrack for Vol. 3.

Set to the backdrop of ‘Awesome Mixtape #2,’ Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 continues the team’s adventures as they traverse the outer reaches of the cosmos. The Guardians must fight to keep their newfound family together as they unravel the mysteries of Peter Quill’s true parentage. Old foes become new allies and fan-favorite characters from the classic comics will come to our heroes’ aid as the Marvel cinematic universe continues to expand.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 sees director James Gunn reuniting with returning cast members Chris Pratt (Star-Lord), Zoe Saldana (Gamora), Dave Bautista (Drax), Bradley Cooper (Rocket), Vin Diesel (Groot), Karen Gillan (Nebula), Michael Rooker (Yondu), Glenn Close (Nova Prime), Sean Gunn (Kraglin) and Laura Haddock (Meredith Quill) alongside new additions Pom Klementieff (Oldboy) as Mantis, Elizabeth Debicki (The Man from U.N.C.L.E.) as Ayesha, Kurt Russell (The Hateful Eight) as Ego the Living Planet, Chris Sullivan (The Drop) as Taserface, Tommy Flanagan (Sons of Anarchy) as Tullk and Sylvester Stallone (Creed) as Stakar.
