James Wan to produce new Universal Monster movie

March 8, 2020 by Gary Collinson

Having enjoyed success with Blumhouse Productions’ reboot of The Invisible Man, Universal Pictures is now turning to another big name in the horror field for another project based upon the iconic Universal Monsters properties.

As reported by Deadline, James Wan (Saw, Insidious, The Conjuring) has signed on to produce “an original horror thriller that will be inspired by the studio’s monster-movie legacy” through his Atomic Monster production company.

While details are scarce, the project “will be part of Universal’s current monster franchise plans” and is being scripted by Robbie Thompson (Cursed).

Having ditched the idea of an interconnected Dark Universe after the disappointing reception to the Tom Cruise-headlined The Mummy, Universal has since adopted a filmmaker-led approach to its classic Monster IPs, beginning with Blumhouse’s critical and commercial hit The Invisible Man.

The studio currently has several projects in the works, including Dark Army from Paul Feig (Ghostbusters: Afterlife), the Dracula movie Renfield from Dexter Fletcher (Rocketman) and The Invisible Woman from director and star Elizabeth Banks (Charlie’s Angels).

Wan has recently wrapped filming on his latest directorial effort, the giallo-inspired Malignant, while his upcoming producing credits include horror sequel The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It and the live-action Mortal Kombat reboot.
