Jennifer Lawrence slams Hollywood pay gap in online essay

October 15, 2015 by Tom Beasley

Jennifer Lawrence (The Hunger Games) has spoken out about the pay gap between men and women in Hollywood, writing for Lena Dunham’s (Girls) online feminist newsletter Lenny.

In the essay, Lawrence addressed revelations in the Sony hack that she had been paid less than her male co-stars in awards season hit American Hustle, saying that she had been “mad at myself” rather than the studio.

“I failed as a negotiator because I gave up early,” she wrote.

“I didn’t want to keep fighting over millions of dollars that, frankly, due to two franchises, I don’t need.”

The Silver Linings Playbook star, set to appear in Oscar hopeful Joy in the next few months, spoke of her frustration at the notion that she would appear spoiled if she spoke out about payment injustices.

She said: “All I hear and see all day are men speaking their opinions, and I give mine in the same exact manner, and you would have thought I had said something offensive.”

“I’m over trying to find the “adorable” way to state my opinion and still be likable! Fuck that.

“I don’t think I’ve ever worked for a man in charge who spent time contemplating what angle he should use to have his voice heard. It’s just heard.”

Lawrence has been widely praised by women in the film industry for this public stance, with the likes of Emma Watson (Regression), Jessia Chastain (The Martian) and Elizabeth Banks (Pitch Perfect 2) expressing their support on Twitter.
