Jonathan Nolan on Westworld: “We’d like to finish the story we started”

April 5, 2024 by Matt Rodgers

When Westworld was abruptly cancelled after four critically-acclaimed seasons, it was believed it would join the pantheon of great unfinished shows, but co-creator Jonathan Nolan has hinted that there may come a time when the park’s robots are sparked back into life.

While on the press tour for his forthcoming adaptation of videogame series Fallout, Nolan was asked by The Hollywood Reporter whether the planned fifth and final season of Westworld would be dramatised in any form.

“Yes, 100 percent. We’re completionists. It took me eight years and a change of director to get Interstellar made. We’d like to finish the story we started.”

Nolan continued, “in terms of finishing the story, you understand that you get the time that you get, sometimes it’s as much as you want, sometimes it’s not. I’m so fucking proud of what we made. It was an extraordinary experience. I think it would be a mistake to look back and only feel regret [over how it ended]. But there’s still very much a desire to finish it.”

Westworld, which was based on Jurassic Park author Michael Crichton’s 1973 film, and was adapted by Nolan and his long-time co-collaborator Lisa Joy, followed a group of highly-intelligent androids called ‘Hosts’ as they catered to the needs of their human guests in an immersive western theme park.

The series starred a large ensemble cast led headed by Evan Rachel Wood, Thandiwe Newton, Ed Harris, Jeffrey Wright, Tessa Thompson, James Marsden and Aaron Paul with Anthony Hopkins playing a lead role in the first season.
