Josh Gad shares disappointing update on Honey, I Shrunk the Kids sequel

June 27, 2023 by Matt Rodgers

Putting aside any disdain for Disney repackaging and rebooting their entire back-catalogue, there was something exciting about the prospect of seeing Rick Moranis return to the big screen for a sequel to 1989 classic Honey, I Shrunk the Kids. Unfortunately the chances of it happening appear to have shrunk, with star Josh Gad revealing that despite coming so close to shooting, “the budget got the best of us”.

Gad, who was set to play a grown-up Nick Szalinski, who aspires to become a great scientist like his father (Moranis), but – also like his father – ends up accidentally shrinking his kids, took to Twitter to reveal that a combination of Covid, scheduling conflicts, and budgetary issues had left the film in limbo.

A lot of u ask me what’s going on with this film. Truth is, we were inches from starting and then COVID hit, inches from starting again & then my schedule exploded with conflicts, inches from starting again & budget got the best of us. If you want it, let your local @disney know. pic.twitter.com/H5l24DQyoU

Honey, I Shrunk the Kids‘ director Joe Johnstone was set to return for Shrunk, while the sequel would have been the first time Rick Moranis had appeared on the big-screen since stepping back from acting to raise his children in 1997. The Ghostbusters and Little Shop of Horrors star last featured in 1997 sequel, Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves.

Not all hope is lost though, with Gad urging fans to contact Disney if they still want to see Shrunk. Let us know if you’re disappointed by this news by heading to our social channels @FlickeringMyth…
