Jumanji: The Next Level tracking bigger opening weekend than Welcome to the Jungle

November 24, 2019 by Gary Collinson

Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black and Karen Gillan return to the world of Jumanji next month as Sony unleashes Jumanji: The Next Level, the follow-up to 2017’s surprise mega-hit Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle.

With tickets for the comedy adventure set to go on sale tomorrow, Deadline is reporting that The Next Level is tracking a domestic box office opening in excess of $40 million, which would put it some $4 million plus ahead of its predecessor’s opening weekend.

Welcome to the Jungle arrived in the wake of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and ultimately proved to be successful counter-programing to the Disney blockbuster, spending 14 weekends on wide release and going on to gross $962.1 million worldwide by the end of its run.

This time around, The Next Level opens a week earlier that Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, and Sony is said to be quietly confident that the movie can display the same kind of legs over the holiday period and into the New Year.

In Jumanji: The Next Level, the gang is back but the game has changed. As they return to Jumanji to rescue one of their own, they discover that nothing is as they expect. The players will have to brave parts unknown and unexplored, from the arid deserts to the snowy mountains, in order to escape the world’s most dangerous game.

Jumanji: The Next Level is being directed by Jake Kasdan (Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle) and will see the return of Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan, Jack Black, and Nick Jonas alongside newcomers Awkwafina (Crazy Rich Asians), Danny DeVito (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia), and Danny Glover (Lethal Weapon).
