Karl Urban to join Mortal Kombat sequel as Johnny Cage

May 5, 2023 by EJ Moreno

Will Karl Urban shadow-kick his way into the hearts of MK fans?

New reports claim Karl Urban is set to star as Johnny Cage, the popular character who first appeared in the Mortal Kombat arcade game in 1992. The Wrap reports Urban has entered final talks to play the character.

It was announced in January that Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema were pressing play on a sequel to last year’s live-action Mortal Kombat movie reboot. We recently learned that director Simon McQuoid closed a deal to return behind the camera. Jeremy Slater (The Umbrella Academy, Moon Knight) is currently writing the script for the as-yet-untitled Mortal Kombat 2.

In video games, Cage is one of the primary heroes defending Earthrealm from various threats, making his first appearance during the first video in 1992 and appearing in almost every sequel after.

The casting of Karl Urban as Johnny Cage helps flesh out the upcoming story and gives fans hope for even more iconic characters to show up. Cage was sorely missed in the first film and was briefly teased at the end. This could lead to more missing characters, like Katana and Noob Saibot.

Urban is currently starring in Amazon’s hit series The Boys, which recently wrapped production on its fourth season. The actor also appeared as Skurge in Thor: Ragnarok and Dr. Leonard ‘Bones’ McCoy in Star Trek and its sequels.
