Linda Cardellini says she’s glad Velma is finally out in Scooby-Doo

November 12, 2022 by EJ Moreno

In the recent Halloween animated film Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo!, the character of Velma obviously crushed on another female character, confirming decades of jokes about her sexuality.

Now, in a new interview, Linda Cardellini – who memorably portrayed the young detective in 2002’s Scooby-Doo and its sequel Monsters Unleashed – has revealed that she is happy to see Velma’s growth and that it’s “great that the character is finally out there.”

“Velma has been around since 1969; I just went trick or treating with my daughter, and there were a lot of Velmas out there, so I love that she still has this place in culture that is sort of always active for decades,” Cardellini tells Entertainment Weekly.

“And I love — you know, I think it’s been hinted at so many times, and I think it’s great that it’s finally out there,” she continued.

Cardellini added an enthused “Oh God, yeah!” when asked if she would be open to reprising the role again, although she joked that “I’m probably too old” for the part.

You can see Cardellini in the third and final season of her Netflix series, Dead to Me, which premieres on November 17th [watch the trailer here]. Meanwhile, Mindy Kaling is set to portray Velma Dinkley in HBO Max’s adult animated spinoff series Velma, and you can watch that trailer here.
