Lionsgate reportedly looking to relaunch Blair Witch Project with new instalment

April 20, 2022 by Gary Collinson

According to a report from The Ankler, it looks like Lionsgate may be preparing to venture out into the Black Hills of Burkittsville, Maryland once more as it looks to relaunch the Blair Witch franchise with a fresh instalment.

EXCLUSIVE: Start prepping those pitches, genre scribes, because it sounds like Lionsgate is ready to venture back into the woods again for another BLAIR WITCH PROJECT, since good IP is never truly dead in the Streaming Age… https://t.co/AGfumgwjT8 pic.twitter.com/68WrjoWkCf

The original The Blair Witch Project from directors Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sanchez took the world by storm upon its release, with the low-budget found-footage horror becoming one of the most successful independent movies of all time back in 1999 with almost $250 million in box office receipts.

Spawning an entire media franchise that includes books, comics, games and more, the film was also followed by the 2000 cash-in sequel Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2. The poor reception to Book of Shadows scuppered plans for a prequel that exploring the origins of the Blair Witch legend, and the franchise lay dormant until Lionsgate and Adam Wingard dropped the surprise sequel Blair Witch in 2016.
